Nobbys and Newcastle beaches were closed after three sharks were sighted in the beach area on Monday morning.
Lifeguards flying a drone sighted two sharks around two metres off Nobbys just before 11am, Henry Scruton of Hunter Surf Life Saving said, before a third shark was spotted a short time later.
The beaches were immediately closed and lifeguards used jet skis to turn the sharks away from the area. Mr Scruton. Both beaches were expected to remain closed for the rest of the day.
This year marks the first season lifeguards have used drones to monitor Nobbys Beach. The technology has been previously used at Tea Gardens, Birubi and Redhead.
