Beach huts 'washed' along Weston-super-Mare seafront by high Spring tides

Beach huts along Weston-super-Mare seafront were washed along the prom by some of the highest tides of the years.

Several of the wooden huts were lifted from their positions as the sea wall came over the sea walls due to the exceptionally high Spring tides on Wednesday night.

Council contractors were on site last night and managed to open the huts to remove items from inside.

The beach huts will be moved and inspected once the tides have receded.

The Bay Café was also flooded by the high tides.

Council staff are currently in the café, which is part of the Tropicana, assessing the damage.

The promenade has also been littered with debris.

The Royal Sands entrance to the seafront remains closed while crews clear up the area.

The high tides came over the seafront despite the town’s sea defences being deployed.

A North Somerset Council spokesman said: “Due to the high tides last night and this morning, Weston seafront has a huge amount of debris on the promenade.

“We had staff down on the seafront up till 10.30pm on Wednesday monitoring the situation and they were back down there at 4.30 on Thursday.

“The flood gates are closed and high tide has just passed.

“This was the highest tide of the year as has led to some flooding in the Bay café.

“Some of the beach huts have been moved and on Wednesday we got most of them opened so items could be removed from them.

“Our priority is the safety of people so we will move the beach huts once the tide has receded and assess what damage has been caused.”

Large amounts of debris has also been washed up on the promenade at Portishead.

In Bristol several roads have been flooded leading to several traffic issues across the city.
