Beach cordoned off after discovery of body

Police have cordoned off a beach in Portsmouth after a body was found on the shore.

Officers were called to the seafront at Eastern Parade, Southsea, at around 6.40am on Tuesday.

Hampshire Police said: “We were called at 6.39am today to a report that a body had been located on the beach on Eastern Parade in Portsmouth.

“Officers have attended the scene and remain there at the current time.”

Pictures from the scene show police in high-vis jackets on the beach, which remains cordoned off.

It comes as Cumbria Police launched an appeal for help to identify a man who was found dead on Roa Island in April.

Furness Coastguard contacted Cumbria Police to report that the body of a man had washed up at Roa Island, south of Rampside, Barrow-in-Furness just after 2pm on 30 April.

Efforts to identify who the man is have so far not been successful.

A forensic artist created an impression of what the man potentially looked like when he was alive to help the public assist the appeal.

Detective Inspector Laura Nield said: “We are not treating the man’s death as suspicious.

“Our main goal is to identify the man for the benefit of his family – and we hope that there may be someone out there who sees the Forensic Artist’s image and is able to assist us in doing that.”

The appeal described the man as white, around 6ft tall, and believed to be between 50 and 70 when he died.

Anyone with information on the man’s identity is asked to call police on 101.
