Beach Box Jesmond takes on Stack Newcastle vendors after venue closed

Beach Box in Jesmond has taken on two street food vendors from Stack after the popular city centre venue closed earlier this month.

The Stack on Pilgrim Street closed on May 2 after four years in the city. It is being dismantled to make way for an office block that will house 9,000 staff from HMRC.

The shipping container village housed a range of local hospitality and retail businesses, as well as hosted regular live entertainment, including DJ sets and Kroud Kareoke. And when it was announced the venue would be closing both drinkers and traders said they were "devastated" to see the venue close.

In the hours before Stack's closure Acropolis owner, Filip Tachan, told ChronicleLive : "We'll be very sad to see it go, there's nowhere else quite like it, the atmosphere every day is so joyful."

But now Beach Box has taken on Acropolis and fellow street food vendor Bao Down, as well as hired some of the staff from Stack to help support those affected by the closure. And while Beach Box said they were sure Stack would return to the city one day, they added it is important all operators work with each other to support each other.

The announcement follows a further £250,000 investment in Beach Box, which is delighted to be launching for the summer of 2022. The investment has allowed for the addition of plenty of 'cosy zones' and outdoor heating on the site.

The venue is now 60% under cover too, so there's no need to worry about the unpredictable British weather.

Beach Box plays host to grass-roots DJs, well-known artists, musicians, and live bands, while also offering a range of food and drinks events. On Saturday and Sunday mornings it also holds a kids club.

The seaside-theme pop-up opened in 2020 behind The Holy Hobo in Jesmond. It returned this April and news of its return delighted the venue's Facebook followers, who tagged friends and left comments included "looking forward to warmer days for drinks" and "I wanna try this".
