Relying on strangers to be your catsitter is always going to be a bit of a risk. Not only are they getting access to your beloved pet—they’re also getting access to your entire home, including, among other things, your WiFi password. And after hiring a catsitter as she went out of the country, Fini (@fini.lou) learned a valuable lesson: your WiFi is sacred, and piracy can have dire consequences.
In a viral clip, which has now amassed 283,400 views, Fini held a thick white envelope to the camera while on-screen text read: “Reminder to be careful who you give your WiFi to. I was out of the country and came back to a 20-page lawsuit. Turns out my cat sitter illegally streamed The White Lotus while staying at my place, hope it was worth it, sis.”
How common is piracy?
As one commenter asked whether the internet provider “ratted [her] out,” Fini replied, “I genuinely don’t know. But they had my IP address (and real address that’s how I got the letter), and I even provided proof I wasn’t in the country, and they said that I could’ve still used a VPN.”
“That’s actually impressive for them to track this,” a second commenter remarked. “Are you sure it isn’t a scam?”
To which Fini replied, “I initially thought it was a scam too, but I worked closely with a lawyer agency, and it’s real. The company sent out over 8,000 letters in Germany. I don’t know anything about these streaming websites, so I can’t even tell you which one it was.”
Meanwhile, other commenters shared their own illegal streaming experiences. “Never in my 8 years of illegal streaming has this happened to me,” one wrote. “I have watched 5k+ films [according to] Letterboxd and hundreds of anime,” another claimed. “I would be in jail for life.”
While a third remarked, “All they do is send threatening letter to scare people enough to make them stop, I’ve never actually heard of anyone getting charged.”
However, according to Simple Germany, streaming and downloading pirated content is against the law.
@fini.lou I wish this was a joke
