BCPG and Nortis Rise apply for ERC sandbox

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has announced that two companies -- BCPG and Nortis Rise -- have applied for the ERC sandbox to study innovative research projects in the country's energy and power sectors.

The two companies proposed projects about new power disruption activities in the sector, said ERC secretary-general Naruepat Amornkosit.

The sandbox application period ends June 28. The commission hopes that 60 agencies and companies will apply.

Ms Naruepat said major roles of the sandbox project include new power business models; new tariffs and bill charges; new stakeholder structures in the power industry; and new power management.

"A shortlist of registered participants will be announced on Aug 30," she said.

BCPG has proposed two plans. The first is a peer-to-peer (P2P) power supply chain via a solar rooftop at the T77 project on Sukhumvit Road that includes a community mall, an international school, a medical clinic and residential buildings.

BCPG started to test the T77 project last August, working with Australia-based Power Ledger.

The second plan is a smart city and solar rooftop system at Chiang Mai University.

Nortis Rise's project is a mobile app to manage power consumption and control energy savings.

The ERC is conducting P2P energy trading as a new market structure in preparation for the open market in the power sector.

The P2P trial is being developed under energy storage systems and electric vehicles from many enterprises: Global Power Synergy Plc, Energy Absolute Plc, B.Grimm Power Plc, Sahapat Group and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat).

"Last week, the ERC began preparing the P2P energy trading model in order to serve free power trade and replace the enhanced single buyer model in the near future," Ms Naruepat said.

Egat has been the enhanced single buyer in the Thai power market for many decades.
