BC Motorhomes makes 15 staff redundant in Ayr

The last remnant of the collapsed Border Cars dealership in Ayr will shut its doors imminently.

BC Motorhomes employed 15 at the showroom on Heathfield Road but all staff have been made redundant, leaving just a skeleton crew.

One said: “It is such a sad time. We are just waiting on word to lock up.

“All the sales staff are away and the vehicles are being moved out.

“Everyone is devastated and the sales team were all let go last week.”

The motorhome site was the last remaining part of the Dumfries-based Border Cars empire left in Ayr.

The company announced last week it was closing after 42 years and seeking administration.

Border Cars expanded throughout the south-west and latterly had showrooms in Stranraer, two in Dumfries, Carlisle and Workington.

Earlier this year Parks, which already had a huge presence on Heathfield Road, bought the the Border Cars Jeep, Mitsubishi and Mazda franchises in Ayr.

But the motorhome unit, said to be a real passion of Border Cars owner Mike Fusco, was not part of that deal.

BC Motorhomes, which traded as a separate company, sold vehicles at up to £100,000 and could house about 75 on the site.

Border Cars Group was founded in 1977 by Mike Fusco, had an £80 million turnover and 250 staff.

It held franchises for Mazda, Kia, Fiat, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Skoda and Ford.

Mike Fusco said: “In recent years, despite the challenging market conditions, both management and staff have worked tirelessly to maintain a profitable business.

“However, with ongoing rising costs and the tough retail climate for the industry, it is with the greatest of reluctance that we are unable to continue trading.

“‘We would like to thank all those employees, past and present, who made the business what it was.”

Skills Development Scotland is giving jobs help to the redundant staff this Friday at 10am its office at 37 Carrick Street, Ayr.
