BBC weatherman leaves viewers in stitches after hilarious Rick Astley blunder

BBC weatherman Matt Taylor left viewers in stitches today after commenting on Rick Astley's music - completely unaware he was listening in.

The legendary singer-songwriter appeared via video-link on BBC Breakfast this morning to discuss his latest single and to launch the BBC Unsung Hero 2020 awards.

But before chatting to hosts Charlie Stayt and Louise Minchin, weatherman Matt hilariously admitted that he's not a huge fan of Rick's work, the Mirror Online reports.

Matt was quickly left red-faced when he was made aware Rick was actually listening in and heard the whole thing.

After Matt finished delivering the weather forecast, BBC Breakfast host Charlie asked him: "Matt, are you a Rick Astley fan?"

To which Matt honestly responded: "Er, not a massive one."

Charlie then remarked: "Well that was the wrong thing to say. He's listening and coming up in just a moment. I'll ask you again, are you a Rick Astley fan?"

Despite being clearly embarrassed at his slip-up, Matt smoothly responds: "Love Rick Astley, the best. Grew up with him."

The camera then panned to singer Rick who was left in hysterics at the blunder, laughing his head off via video call.

Charlie and Matt were seen laughing as well, as Louise struggled to contain her laughter too.

Charlie then says: "Here he is now, he's listening in and he heard everything you said Matt. The damage is done."

Embarrassed Matt says: "Thanks Charlie," to which Charlie says: "Anytime, anytime."

After BBC Breakfast shared the cringe clip on Twitter, it instantly became a viral hit.

Matt replied to the video, saying: "That's just cruel," alongside a row of laughing emojis.

Meanwhile, Rick admitted there was no bad blood between them, as he tweeted at Matt saying: "All is forgiven."

To which grateful Matt replied: "You sir are a true gent! Thank you."

BBC Breakfast Viewers at home were left in hysterics as they rushed to Twitter to share their thoughts on the incredible gaffe.

One fan wrote: "That was real live telly, Matt you did it very well, a true pro. Just think how much worse it could have been."

Another added: "Brilliant! With all the doom and gloom at the moment we need more moments like this in the morning! I love Rick's music! Loved Rick's response too! Very funny! Enjoy the sunshine today everybody."

A third penned: "Well to be fair, saying you're not a massive fan isn't the same as saying I don't like his music. But it look a lot like he got set up and ambushed!"

"Poor Matt - and poor Rick (whose music I have always loved)! Fair play to him for his response though," a fourth said.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays from 6am on BBC One.
