BBC Weather release Edinburgh forecast and reveal the chances of a White Christmas

Hopes for a white Christmas looks like they could be fading as the BBC have released their forecast for Christmas Day.

Despite having a mild week, with temperatures reach 10 and 11, from Thursday December 16, cooler air will bring the temperature right back down to 9 degrees and 6 on Friday and Christmas week the temperatures aren't expected to go any higher than 6, according to BBC weather.

The Met Office state that they can give a snow update five days before and the last widespread white Christmas in the UK was in 2010.

The Met Office says it was extremely unusual, as not only was there snow on the ground at 83 percent of stations (the highest amount ever recorded) but snow or sleet also fell at 19 percent of stations.

Snow also fell on Christmas around the UK in 2009, 2015, 2016.

While on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, it is expected to be cold only reach 5 degrees at the highest and 1 at the lowest, no snow is forecasted as of yet.

BBC Weather predict the week to be cloudy with a light breeze.

On December 26, rain is forecasted.

The Met Office forecast fog in the south of the UK. Their outlook for Christmas week is as followed,

"Through this period, high pressure, already across southern areas, is expected to build further north, pushing the remaining wind and rain away. Here any rain will be light, giving a much drier second half to December for all and winds expected to be predominantly calm. Although rather cloudy at first, cloud amounts should reduce through the period, especially in the south and southeast.

"Temperatures near average to start, and locally mild in the north, although they will tend to become colder in time for Christmas, especially in southern areas. As a result, the risk of frost and fog increases, the fog slow to clear through the mornings, and perhaps lasting all day in some places."
