BBC weather presenter Owain Wyn Evans explains why May weather is so bad

It is safe to say that May has been a washout for most of us.

Lockdown restrictions in Wales may have eased, but the weather has not been kind for people wanted to make the most of outdoor hospitality. And the outlook is not much better with a weather warning and more bad weather to come at the end of this week and the weekend. Wales has seen at least 25% more rain than would usually be expected over the course of the whole month.

According to the Met Office, this May is one of the wettest on record. However, it remains a long way off the all-time record of 184.2mm of in May 1967.

In response BBC weatherman Owain Wyn Evans has been explaining what is going on and why the weather is so rubbish.

"Now that the lockdown rules have been eased once more across most part of the UK, people are once more really aware of what is going on outside and want that to be kind to them," he explained in the video for Newsbeat.

"What you have got to remember is spring is a transition between the winter and the summer. So we often get a real mish-mash of weather. It's like you are chucking all the weather types into the air and whatever lands is what you get, darling. I think what has happened of late is we've had several areas of low pressure moving across the UK, so low pressure equals unsettled weather.

"That's the big picture if you like, as to what's going on at the moment. So short term, are we going to see a big dramatic change? Am I going to be in my bathing trunks? No. But spring will come to an end and of course, then we'll start to see something more like summer, when we get to summer."

Looking ahead Owain says it is too far away to predict how summer will be. AccuWeather are forecasting high temperatures for the majority of next month, and the Met Office long range forecast for the start to middle of June says more settled conditions could bring "some warmer days".

But Owain says: "It's really hard to say what the summer is going to be like - it's too far away. But it'll get to us and we're all hoping for something warmer and drier, and generally that's what summer bring us. So I think we are going to get that."
