BBC weather forecasts widespread frost and rain over Bank Holiday weekend

Forecasts have played down earlier suggestions of a 'Spanish plume' bringing a heatwave to the UK.

In fact the BBC is forecasting a very cool weekend ahead with overnight frosts and the potential for rain.

The mercury is set to drop by the end of the week but those out enjoying the bank Holiday weekend will still be experiencing around 16degree heat at during the day most days.

However gardeners are being warned to protect their plants with frosts threatening several parts of the country overnight on Saturday and Sunday.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said: "Towards the Bank Holiday it’s looking a bit colder, with Saturday looking to be the coolest day.

“On Saturday, there’s a big east-west divide emerging, with the east looking windy, with showers pushing down from the north, with a small chance of snow in higher parts of eastern Scotland, although it won’t settle.

“In the west it’s looking decent, with sunshine and reasonably warm temperatures, at 15 or 16C, compared to 8 or 9C in the east.

“Into Sunday, high pressure will build across the country. There could be some overnight frost from a cold night on Saturday, so gardeners should beware.

“Sunday is looking decent, with lots of sunshine. There’s a small risk of showers but it will be dry for most and more pleasant than Saturday, with temperatures into the mid-teens across the country.

“On Monday there’s little change – it’ll be dry, with the possibility of another frosty start, but overall not a bad day.”

Meanwhile BBC weather forecaster Helen Willetts warned a swathe of cloud will engulf Britain and result in thundery downpours and strong winds from today.

A new shop is going to be built inside the car park of Asda in Weston-super-Mare

Ms Willetts said: “Once the fog does clear, the day tomorrow looks a little cloudier on the whole with more showers around. That’s because our weather front is making its steady progress eastwards.

"But it is tending to break up so the sunshine will punch through those clouds and what that does is give more energy to that cloud and that moisture so we will find some big showers and some thunderstorms developing come the afternoon – not for all but there will be some lively downpours and gusty winds near those showers.”
