BBC Vigil viewers react to twist-filled finale and shock character death

The final episode of BBC's hit mini-series Vigil has now aired - and we have a lot to say - and it appears Twitter does too.

With the return of Craig Burke (Martin Compston) and a shock death of a beloved character, there was a lot to take in during the final episode of Vigil.

In episode five, viewers were left on a major cliff-hanger with Glover and Silva's life both at risk with one about to drown and another suffering from nerve agent exposure.

As Silva finally managed to escape from the torpedo tube that Doward placed her in thanks to none other than Prentice, they were soon faced with the Russian spy and there was no easy escape.

Prentice unfortunately died but in turn, saved Silva's life. (BBC/World Productions)

After trying to contact the others and failing due to the wires having been cut on the phone, Prentice told Silva to run, and as she did, Doward killed Prentice by stabbing him brutally several times.

With Silva now owing her life to Prentice three times (yes three) and viewers at home in shock, many took to Twitter in a flood of emotions.

One said: "I did not expect that to happen."

A second tweeted: "Noooooo. Poor Prentice."

Martin Compston finally returned! (BBC/World Productions)

A third added: "No. i’m heartbroken. I rly rly liked prentice."

Thankfully it wasn't all doom and gloom however as Greenock's Martin Compston ended up returning, albeit through video as he did in the first episode, and Twitter went wild.

One said: "I'd forgotten Steve Arnott was ever in this, to be honest."

Another added: "Martin Compston finally has another scene!!"

When Doward was being questioned, a third tweeted: "Don’t you badmouth our Martin Compston, Doward, you absolute wrong ‘un."

A fourth joked: "Martin Compston for all the BAFTAs" whilst another said similar by adding: "Easiest £100k for Martin Compston."

Vigil has finally concluded - what do you think? Do you want a second season? Let us know in the comments.
