BBC Vigil viewers react to Martin Compston's unexpected scene less than 10 minutes in

After Line of Duty finished for what is believed to be the very last series, us Scots have been waiting for any sign of Compston on our tv screens - and we didn't have to wait long.

We've seen the Greenock-born actor in hit-tv shows such as the The Next, Line of Duty and soon-to-be The Rig which is unsurprisingly expected to do well once aired.

Vigil, which has another episode airing tonight (August 30), is set and filmed in Scotland with some scenes being very recognisable to locals featuring prime locations including the Squinty Bridge.

Starring alongside Compston is Gentleman Jack and Doctor Foster star Suranne Jones, who plays DCI Silva.

Jones is first seen running across the landmark bridge late at night before being called in to help investigate a death on HMS Vigil - a fictional submarine of the Royal Navy.

GoT star Rose Leslie, best known for her role as Ygritte in the HBO fantasy series, also joins the cast playing DS Kirsten Longacre investigating the death back on land.

Also making up the cast are Paterson Joseph, known for role in the Peep Show, Sex Education's Connor Swindells, Gary Lewis, known for his international breakthrough in Billy Elliot in 2000, as well as another from Doctor Foster, Adam James.

Tuning into the first episode last night, viewers were waiting to see the familiar faces - but nobody expectd *that scene* less than 10 minutes in, and warning, there are spoilers ahead.

Compston plays Craig Burke whose role is to monitor the sonar on HMS Vigil. During his shift, he hears something happening above and raises it with his superiors when he realises that a trawler was in trouble.

After being told they weren't going to do anything about it, Burke was clearly angry and storms off. However just hours later (or about eight minutes for us watching at home), he was found dead from a suspected drug overdose.

Suspicious.

After the confirmation that it was his body, Steve Arnott fans were not happy and people began having flashbacks to Line of Duty.

And as always, the twitter comments were gold.

One said: "The balls on Vigil to do *that* in its first 10 minutes."

Another added: "They killed ole Steve Arnott off in the first 10 minutes?! This is worse than the H reveal."

One agreed and tweeted: "I am watching Vigil purely for Martin Compston and he dies within the first 8 minutes, I haven’t been this upset since this Line of Duty finale."

BBC's Vigil airs again tonight on BBC One at 9pm. It airs Sunday weekly thereafter.
