BBC Vigil finale: Fans react to 'anxiety-inducing' twist-filled final episode of hit show

BBC's Vigil has been the UK's favourite nail biting Sunday night drama for the last month.

Each episode of Vigil offered more twists and turns as DCI Silva, played by Suranne Jones, realised that there was more to a murder case than she first expected.

Martin Compston played the short lived Craig Burke, but he made another appearance wrapping up the season.

Before we go on, spoilers for Vigil episode six ahead - you have been warned.

In the same way Vigil started, we saw Silva climb up to the helicopter and a last video of Craig as a whistle blower.

Fans were relieved as Silva is finally found by an unlikely hero, Lieutenant Commander Mark Prentice - but lurking behind is the Russian spy, Matthew Dowder.

But at the end of the tense drama that was full of secrecy and murder, all you need is love, as the saying goes.

In both Silva and Burke's time of need all they thought about were the loves in their life to get them through.

Fans quickly took to Twitter to weigh in as some cried when Silva and Longacre were reunited while others were on the edge of their seats as Dowder and Lieutenant Commander Prentice fought.

One fan said: "I'm actually shaking watching Vigil season finale, so intense!"

Another said: "Got to say that the fight and hunt for Silva in confined, dark quarters was the tensest piece of TV I've seen since the Line Of Duty finales."

A third tweeted: "I don’t think I’ve breathed at all during the last hour."

One wrote as Longacre and Silva reunited: "MY HEART IS LITERALLY BURSTING RIGHT NOW."

But one person summed up exactly what we've been thinking all season: "There is no way I would ever get on a submarine."

Many fans have been wondering if there could be a season two after Vigil has been crowned BBC's most watched drama in 2021 boasting over 10 million views.

It looks like the story has been wrapped up for Silva and Longacre, but HMS Vigil is continuing her journey.

You can watch the whole season of Vigil on BBC iPlayer.
