BBC Vigil fans left stunned after penultimate episode's suspenseful cliffhanger

Vigil fans were felt stunned after the BBC drama quickly escalated in the final five minutes of last night's episode.

In the penultimate episode, the killer of Craig Burke, played by Martin Compston, was revealed after another death sent HMS Vigil into lockdown when an 'airborne hazard' raised the alarm.

No, not Covid - although that would be a plot twist, but a toxic gas leak flooded the missile corridor.

A word of warning before we continue - big spoilers ahead for episode five.

In comparison to the previous episode that had a slight focus on DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre's relationship, last night (Sunday September 19) picked up the pace when the suspicious-looking cook, Jackie Hamilton, was proven to have released a nerve agent in the galley stores.

The toxic box couldn't stay there, and after realising it was linked to Craig Burke's murder, Amy needed to assess the crime scene, while removing the container with coxswain Glover.

If exposed to the gas, they could lose their lives, so in a Chernobyl-like fashion, the duo stuck on some protective suits and helmets with ice down their backs to keep them cool.

But would that be enough?

In a dramatic turn of events, Amy learnt someone had been blackmailing Jackie - and it was someone on the ship.

Another crew member was sent to assist Amy flush the toxic device, revealing that the shifty looking CPO Matthew Doward was more than he seemed.

After being hit out cold by Doward, Amy woke up in a torpedo tube that Doward was rapidly filling up with water.

Just what you want after experiencing almost drowning in a car that killed your husband when you have anxiety.

As Amy is kicking, shouting for help, trying to keep her head above the water that is quickly rising, the credits roll.

And fans on Twitter could not handle it.

One viewer wrote this morning: "Still not over #Vigil from last night. Im still experiencing breathing issues from the last scene."

"Omg! I was literally holding my breath at the end... Phew!", wrote another.

"The claustrophobia...the bath tub...people hitting Suranne Jones...the claustrophobia...the bath tub... it's a lot of emotions to process," one distressed viewer added.

A fourth said: "#vigil makes me sweat from every place a human can sweat from. It's unhealthy."

We will find out what happens to Amy in the finale next Sunday at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer - and we will be holding our breaths for the rest of the week.

Watch Vigil on Sunday 9pm BBC One and catch up on BBC iPlayer.
