Multiple politicians have urged the BBC to change the criteria to win their Sports Personality of the Year award after the news Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford will be ineligible to be given the prize.
Rashford has been leading the fight against child poverty this year, spearheading a huge campaign and garnering public support for extending free school meals for children.
However, the England international's selfless work - which saw him rewarded with an MBE - currently meet fall in the criteria to win the SPOTY trophy.
Rashford is currently unable to be the recipient of this year's trophy as his work feeding underprivileged children doesn't fall under the "sporting achievements" category.
But multiple politicians have called for the BBC to make an exception for the striker, including the Mayor of Greater Manchester - Andy Burnham.
"Marcus is the first sportsperson of recent times to use the full power of his personality and experience for the benefit of others," Burnham told The Daily Mail.
"He has put young people who grow up feeling forgotten at the centre of the nation's attention and given millions hope.
"I know Greater Manchester will put footballing differences aside and unite behind this campaign to make him SPOTY 2020."
Labour councillor Tracey Rawlings shares Burnham's sentiment, saying: "Sports Personality of the Year is an award that resonates with the public more than the honours system. It's a people's award."
Graham Stringer, Labour's MP who represents Blackey and Broughton, said: "As a United fan, I'm delighted to say he should be considered for Sports Personality of the Year.
"For a man so talented and so dedicated, he has a huge streak of humility as well."
Rashford and his Manchester United team-mates will be back in action this evening, welcoming German side RB Leipzig to Old Trafford for their second Champions League Group H match.
