BBC to rerun all Fawlty Towers episodes with racist remarks from character removed

The BBC will rerun every episode of Fawlty Towers - but racist remarks from one of the characters will be removed.

All 12 episodes of the popular comedy series will air from March 15 as part of the broadcasters Festival of Funny.

But a controversial part from ‘The Germans’ episode will be cut from the rerun, reports the Mirror.

The scene sees Fawlty Towers resident Major Gowen go on a racist rant about the West Indies cricket team - using terms such as the n-word and “wogs” to describe the players.

It is the second time that the scene has come under the microscope in the last year - with the episode being removed entirely from the BBC-owned UKTV’s Gold Box Set in June

Writer and star John Cleese, who plays Basil Fawlty, branded the BBC as ‘gutless’ for their decision.

Arguing that the remarks were fine in context, he said: “The major was an old fossil.

We were not supporting his views, we were making fun of them.

“If people are too stupid to see that, what can one say?”

But in 2013, he agreed to the words being cut from a BBC2 pre-watershed repeat.

At the time some viewers accused the BBC of “airbrushing history”.

Writing on the BBC’s Points of View message board, one sighed: “The major is a racist old bigot, incongruous with modern society.

“The audience isn’t supposed to agree with him, they’re supposed to laugh at him.”
