The BBC has confirmed that it will air a tribute programme in honour of Dame Vera Lynn.

It was confirmed on Thursday by the singer’s family that Lynn, who was nicknamed the ‘Forces’ Sweetheart’ for boosting the nation’s morale during the Second World War, had died.

A statement released to PA read: “The family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Britain’s best-loved entertainers at the age of 103.

“Dame Vera Lynn, who lived in Ditchling, East Sussex, passed away earlier today, 18 June 2020, surrounded by her close family.”

Shortly after the statement was released, BBC Director General Tony Hall paid his respects to the star.

“What sad news. Not only was she dear to many, she was a symbol of hope during the war and is part of our national history,” he wrote.

“She demonstrated how music and entertainment can bring joy in the most challenging times. Something that will resonate with many people today.

“The BBC will be showing a special tribute programme tonight.”

Further details of the programme are yet to be announced.

Several other famous faces have taken to social media to honour Lynn, who also sang The White Cliffs Of Dover and There'll Always Be An England.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote: “Dame Vera Lynn’s charm and magical voice entranced and uplifted our country in some of our darkest hours.

“Her voice will live on to lift the hearts of generations to come.”

Meanwhile, Katherine Jenkins, who has previously duetted with Lynn, said: “I simply cannot find the words to explain just how much I adored this wonderful lady.

“There will never be another Dame Vera Lynn. Forces’ Sweetheart and our sweetheart. An icon. A legend. An inspiration. My mentor and my friend. I will miss you greatly and I know we’ll meet again some sunny day.”

Lynn celebrated her 103rd birthday back in March, marking the occasion by releasing a new video for her iconic hit We’ll Meet Again which included a new voiceover aimed at boosting morale during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are facing a very challenging time at the moment, and I know many people are worried about the future,” she said. “I’m greatly encouraged that despite these struggles, we have seen people joining together.

“Music is so good for the soul, and during these hard times we must all help each other to find moments of joy.”
