BBC to help parents homeschool kids with new daily online lessons from next week

With schools not set to reopen for at least another week after lockdown was extended, many parents are still trying to get to grips with homeschooling their kids.

But parents trying to help their children learn at home are being given a helping hand from the BBC, with the launch of online daily lessons from tomorrow (Monday 20 April).

The broadcaster revealed its biggest push of online education yet will bringing programmes and lessons to people's homes through BBC Bitesize, which offers free online study resources for pupils.

The BBC Teach website has already proved popular with youngsters, with information helpfully broken down into a variety of subjects and age groups and featuring classroom resources.

From tomorrow, it will offer BBC Bitesize Daily, which will be filmed in Match Of The Day’s studio in Salford.

Children's lessons will feature presenters including Oti Mabuse, Katie Thistleton and Karim Zeroual with support from "top quality teachers" and organisations, including Royal Shakespeare Company, Premier League and Puffin Books.

There will also be videos, fun quizzes, podcasts and articles appearing daily via BBC iPlayer, red button, BBC Four and BBC Sounds, reports Manchester Evening News.

The "comprehensive" package is aimed at minimising disruption to children’s education during the lockdown and provide a useful routine for pupils and their parents.

'Parents look to the BBC'

Tony Hall, Director General of the BBC, said: “In these uncertain times parents look to the BBC to support them and offer education while children can’t be in school. This is the biggest education effort the BBC has ever undertaken. This comprehensive package is something only the BBC would be able to provide.

“We are proud to be there when the nation needs us, working with teachers, schools and parents to ensure children have access and support to keep their learning going - come what may.

“We have been overwhelmed by the offers of help and support in putting this provision together and are looking forward to ensuring every child can continue to learn, and have fun, through our high-quality teaching and accessible education offer.”
