BBC to edit out racist remarks by Major in Fawlty Towers repeats

The BBC will edit out racist remarks made by a Fawlty Towers character when the show is repeated on the network again.

The comedy series, which only ran for 12 episodes, will be aired again from Monday in the BBC's Festival of Funny.

Mirror Online reports that remarks made by Major Gowan will be cut from the show when it is shown again.

Last year writer and star John Cleese, who plays Basil Fawlty, called the BBC “gutless” for temporarily removing an episode with the Major’s racist remarks from the UKTV streaming platform.

He said: “The major was an old fossil. We were not supporting his views, we were making fun of them.

“If people are too stupid to see that, what can one say?”

But in 2013, he agreed to the words being cut from a BBC2 pre-watershed repeat.

The BBC said removing offensive language was policy for shows airing before 9pm and met Ofcom’s language guidance.

The series is available on iPlayer from Monday.
