BBC Three will return as a broadcast channel next month six years after being axed

BBC Three is coming back as a broadcast channel on February 1 - much to the delight of fans.

Responsible for smash-hit shows including This Country, Fleabag and RuPaul's Drag Race UK, the channel was moved online in 2016.

However, following calls for its resurgence, the broadcaster has decided it to bring it back.

The channel will now broadcast from 7pm every night and will be available on Freeview, Sky, Virgin and Freesat. It can also be watched on the BBC Three channel page on iPlayer.

Much to the delight of sports fans it will also host the semi-finals and the final of the popular Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) live on TV in its launch week.

Football pundit Jermaine Jenas will be in charge of coverage.

BBC Three controller Fiona Campbell said: "We know how popular sport is with younger audiences and it's going to have a big part to play on BBC Three.

"Afcon is set to be an incredibly exciting tournament with some of the best players in the world on show and it's brilliant news that we will be showing the climax of the competition on free-to-air television."

Last year, BBC research found there was a "strong case" for BBC Three to come back as a regular TV channel, with the focus on younger audiences.

One of the jewels in the channel's crown is undoubtedly mockumentary This Country starring Daisy May Cooper and her brother Charlie.

The pair play West Country bumpkins Kerry and Kurtan Mucklowe.

Daisy won the 2018 BAFTA TV Award for Best Female Comedy Performance for the show.

Fleabag made its debut on BBC Three (BBC/Two Brothers/Luke Varley)

Another stand-out success was Fleabag starring and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, based on her one-woman show first performed in 2013.

The channel proved a great platform for the 36-year-old, who went onto contribute to James Bond film No Time To Die as well as producing the award-winning Killing Eve.

Speaking last year when news of that BBC Three would be migrating back to TV, the channel's controller said: "This is a big moment, with the new channel providing a destination for young audiences to discover more content on the BBC.

"We will work hand in hand with iPlayer to provide a broad offering that is representative of the whole of the UK, and we will continue to back new talent and bold ideas."
