BBC Three to air new five-part documentary on story of 'Peru Two' drug mules

BBC Three are to air a new documentary which will provide a detailed account of how drug mules Melissa Reid and Michaella McCollum tried to smuggle £1.5million of cocaine into Spain from Peru back in 2013.

'High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule' will tell the story of how Melissa, from Lenzie, and Michaella McCollum, from Northern Ireland, wound up in one of the most notorious prisons in the world after trying to smuggle 11kg of cocaine out of Lima.

The pair made headlines all over the world when they were sentenced to almost seven years in jail after being caught at Jorge Chavez International airport as they attempted what can only be described as one of the riskiest crimes imaginable.

The five-part documentary will see Michaella describe how she went from being on her first holiday in a foreign country to meeting Melissa and finding herself in jail, the Daily Record reports.

Explaining the new series which will commence on July 3, the BBC said: “The series has unique access to Michaella, her family and friends as well as others closely connected to the case and with a range of perspectives on the drugs trade.

It reveals how a small-town girl from rural Northern Ireland who didn’t even know where Peru was, let alone speak a word of Spanish, embarked on one of the riskiest crimes imaginable - and failed - only to rise up in the ranks of one of the most notorious prisons in the world before being released on probation after serving three years.”

The pair, who are also known as the 'Peru Two', first met in Spain in 2013 where they claim they were recruited by an armed drugs gang to smuggle cocaine over from South America - with a promise of £4,000 to £5,000 if they were successful in doing so.

Following her return to Scotland, Reid confessed that she has been on a “downward spiral” of ecstasy, cocaine and ketamine in Spain. The Scot wanted to be in on the smuggling plot for a £4,000 payment so she could gloat about it afterwards.

She said: “I made a conscious decision to do it and no one forced me. I did an awful thing and I’ve paid the price.”

Following their release from prison, mother-of-two Michaella has appeared on television numerous times and has released a book.

Melissa doesn't feature in the documentary but an actor portrays her for some re-enactments.

Watch all five episodes of High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule on BBC Three from July 3.
