BBC Three Glow Up: Glasgow contestant to battle it out to become UK's Next Make-up Star

A Glasgow contestant will be competing on a brand new season of BBC Three show, called Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-up Star to be named UK's next big thing in the industry.

Hosted by Maya Jama, Glow Up returns for its fourth series as 10 aspiring make-up artists are tested by leading industry experts in varied high-stakes Professional Assignments from TV to theatre, fashion to front covers and on-line beauty campaigns.

At the Glow Up Studio their talents are pushed to the limit with creative make-up transformations and each week the two MUAs who least impress series judges, Val Garland and Dominic Skinner, go head- to-head in a Face Off elimination, putting their technical skills under the spotlight.

After 8 weeks, the last MUA standing is crowned Britain’s Next Make-up Star, winning a contract assisting some of the world’s top make-up artists.

And our Glaswegian contestant is Yong-Chin, a freelance make-up artist and part time nanny who now lives in London.

Yong-Chin is mixed-race heritage, Scottish & Malaysian. A proud ‘working-class’ Glaswegian, her Asian heritage inspires her love of art, fashion & more recently make-up.

Encouraged by her parents to ‘graft’ and work hard for a living, she grew up representing her country as a successful competitive swimmer, and it was only when she got to 18 that she realised her heart was in fashion.

She enrolled on a Fashion Design course at Kingston University and whilst completing her course, she realised it wasn’t fashion she loved - it was make-up.

She has since spent time perfecting her craft, working on editorial collaborations with fellow creatives.

Yong-Chin works as a Nanny to pay the bills and fund her creative lifestyle but is desperate to do make-up fulltime and pursue her passion doing what makes her happy.

A freelance MUA in her downtime, Yong-Chin often collaborates with her graduate friends from Central St. Martins on their projects and editorial shoots.

She often draws on her love for her Asian heritage to inspire her looks – combining technical precision with creative chaos – resulting in something totally unique.

Yong-Chin is completely self-taught, with no formal training and gains on the job experience whilst on shoots with her fellow Kingston University fashion Graduates.

Yong-Chin dreams of ultimately becoming a Beauty Editor for a big magazine.

Failing that, she wants to focus on Fashion Week and big editorial projects – travelling the world to inspire and showcase her talent and work.

In episode one, the make-up artists (MUAs) travel to Birmingham for their first professional assignment, a social media campaign for a sport and fitness brand.

This week’s guest judge, the company’s styling manager Ivy Weir-Ikpeme, challenges the MUAs to produce a gym-friendly, natural make-up look for their diverse customer base.

Healthy looking skin and colour matching are a must, plus they need to add one fierce ‘fitspiration’ feature that stays true to the campaign’s brief, but stops the user (from scrolling) in their tracks.

You can cheer on Yong-Chin on the first episode of Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-up Star on Wednesday, May 11 at 8pm on BBC Three.
