BBC The Traitors winners and the two words that changed the entire game

BBC The Traitors crowned its three winners on Thursday, December 22. Hosted by Claudia Winkleman the brilliant and nail-biting game started out with 22 strangers in a castle in the Scottish Highlands.

In each episode the contestants had to take on missions together to put money into a prize pot, however, hidden among them were the traitors who had to go undetected and "murder" a fellow player every night. Everyone else in the game was labelled a faithful and it was their job to detect who the traitors were and banish them from the game before they became their next victim.

In the final, host Claudia explained that if any traitors remained in the game when it ended they would take all the money for themselves. If only faifthfuls remained then they would split the cash, and with over £100k up for grabs the stakes had never been higher.

Wilfred, who was a traitor from the very beginning, and Kieran, who was recruited late in the competition, were still in the game when the show aired its final roundtable, as were faithfuls Hannah, Meryl and Aaron. But after realising Wilfred was going to throw him under the bus like he did with his former fellow co-conspirators Alyssa and Amanda, Kieran said just two words that seemed to change the entire fate of the final.

As Wilf, Hannah, Meryl and Aaron all voted for Kieran to be banished, Kieran chose to eliminate Wilf and as he held up his slate simply told the table "parting gift." The contestants had previously been told they would decide when the game ends, meaning they could continue to vote people out until they were convinced no traitors remained.

In an attempt to stay in the game Wilf insisted to his co-stars that Kieran had "set me up to make me look bad". But the seeds were then sown with Aaron asking: "But why does he want that, Wilf? Why was he going all cryptic? And at the end he said it was a parting gift."

Meryl said: "I don't know what to do from here. I genuinely do trust you guys." Hannah said: "Wilf I've never, ever wavered on you before but that comment...."

After taking a break from the roundtable the group reconvened were both Hannah and Aaron decided to vote again, ultimately banishing Wilf, the last remaining traitor, from the game. Taking to Twitter one fan wrote: "Kieran taking down Wilf with that killer shot of 'A Parting Gift' is one of my favourite pieces of tv this year! Wilf just started unraveling from that moment!"

While another added: "I can’t get over the PARTING GIFT line loooooool. Sorry but kieran is a legend for that."

And a third commented: "Sorry but Kieran's final line 'a parting gift' was the most iconic moment of the show, deserves an oscar for that scene." For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.
