BBC The Tourist: Jamie Dornan felt 'second-rate' to ex Keira Knightley and hinted that her fame caused their split

Jamie Dornan is one of TV's most popular actors thanks to gritty roles in dramas like The Fall and new BBC series The Tourist.

But between 2003 and 2005, the Fifty Shades of Gray actor dated Hollywood darling Keira Knightley and at the time he was famous for his work as a model.

The good-looking couple were frequently snapped as they attended premieres and glitzy parties and everyone thought they were a match made in heaven.

But after just two years they split up. So what happened between the former couple?

In 2008, Dornan told the Mail on Sunday that he felt "second-rate" to Knightley and felt that her fame was ultimately the cause of their split.

"There is a big pressure when you go out with someone like Keira," he explained. "You can feel a bit second-rate and that's what started to happen. It's not like I was bringing the bread to the table - and that can start to affect everything.

"The man is meant to be the Alpha in the relationship on the money and power front and clearly I was not. You feel you have to be dominant in other areas and that leads to problems.

"Keira could see what I was going through and it would have been better if I'd kept it hidden from her. It's a slow process, trying to be this Alpha Male."

But a year after his "alpha" comments, Dornan told the Evening Standard, "That was taken totally out of context. I didn't mean that."

Whatever the true circumstances, they have both happily moved on. Irishman Jamie is now married to musician and former actress Amelia Warner and they have three young daughters.

Meanwhile, Keira tied the knot with musician James Righton and they have two young daughters.
