BBC The Responder fans make Martin Freeman demand after bingeing series

A social media campaign was launched to give Martin Freeman a BAFTA for his portrayal of a troubled Liverpool cop in The Responder.

Many fans have already binge watched the whole five-part drama on the BBC's iPlayer streaming service, and made the call even before it had finished its run on terrestrial TV.

The series is based on former Merseyside Police officer Tony Schumacher's experiences working for the force, and was filmed at various locations around the city.

Some even compared it to the classic American boxset The Wire, and said Freeman had given "the performance of a lifetime," while others called for a second series.

The 2022 BAFTA TV awards take place on May 8.

Ali O'Neill said: "Can we talk about The Responder for a minute? Martin Freeman is outstanding. The haunted look in his eyes and the bags under them. Give him the BAFTA now."

She later added: "Starting the push to get #TheResponder recognised for its writing, acting and production. Drama from the writer's real life experiences at it's finest. Exceptional characterisation by Martin Freeman."

Lisa Bates-Wallis replied: "Totally agree, binge watched the whole series last night. Absolutely superbly written and top class acting."

Susan Seddon said: "Give Martin Freeman a BAFTA. Fantastic performance from him in this drama."

Janeymode said: "Whoever is up against Martin Freeman for a BAFTA this year will just be saying 'maybe next year' to themselves."

misterklee said: "Martin, just watched the last episode of The Responder. Thank you, you've managed to give the performance of a lifetime and we now have a worthy rival to The Wire, this was the best British drama I've seen in a very long time."

Louise Rixon said: "Binge finished #theresponder. Truly outstanding piece of TV drama, absolutely loved every single second #martinfreeman performance is nothing less than BAFTA worthy and please tell me there's a season 2."

Adam O'Donnell said: "I thought he was brilliant in #theoffice but Martin Freeman plays a superb role in #theresponder on #bbc give this guy a bafta now! Not only has he acted brilliantly, he got that #scouse accent down to a tee!"

The Responder continues Monday at 9pm on BBC One.
