BBC Strictly: AJ Odudu pulls out of tour as EastEnders star brought in to replace her

Strictly star AJ Odudu missed the final of the BBC dancing show and now she is to miss the tour, it has been announced.

The presenter, aged 33, had won through the semi-final of the TV competition to earn her place alongside Rose Ayling-Ellis and John Whaite, but after injuring her foot, she had to withdraw.

This same injury means she will also miss the Strictly tour.

AJ said: “I’m devastated not to be able to take part in the Strictly tour due to injury. I had hoped for one last dance with Kai, but I must obviously follow the medical advice. I wish my Strictly family the very best of luck on the road and I’ll definitely be there to cheer them on."

She will be replaced by EastEnders star Maisie Smith, who was a finalist in the 2020 series.

Maisie said: “I’m thrilled to be asked to restart my Strictly journey on this year’s arena tour.

“Kai and I will be dancing the quickstep and the samba – I can’t wait for rehearsals to start next week.

“It will be a joy to dance with everyone and so great to see my EastEnders friend Rose again. I wish AJ a speedy recovery.”

The tour begins this month and continues throughout February, visiting places such as Sheffield, Leeds, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Liverpool and Nottingham.

Due to take part are John Whaite and Johannes Radebe, Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice, Rhys Stephenson and Nancy Xu, Tilly Ramsay and Nikita Kuzmin, and Sara Davies and Aljaz Skorjanec.

Max George from boyband The Wanted is also set to take part in the tour with professional dancer Katya Jones. Max was a contestant on the show in 2020.

It will be hosted by former Strictly professional and host of spin-off It Takes Two Janette Manrara, and the judges will be Shirley Ballas, Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel Horwood.
