BBC star Chris Packham is packing his bags and going on a trip with a difference

Chris Packham is the latest star to enjoy a UK road trip for a TV show – as channel bosses struggle to film abroad.

The Springwatch presenter has teamed up with his stepdaughter Megan McCubbin, 25, for the BBC series featuring more than wildlife.

It comes as British viewers are inundated with “staycation” shows due to Covid travel restrictions.

Packham said: “It is Megs and I in an electric camper van driving around the UK, looking for wildlife, having a bit of chit chat, visiting a castle or two.

"It’s sort of a fly-on-the-wall of what we get up to when not doing TV.”

The naturalist, 60, has already filmed in South Wales, Snowdonia and Cumbria for the six-part show.

He said: “We are talking about all the issues in our lives. It’s a bit of banter and arguing.”

TV schedules are full of travel shows such as Motorhoming with Merton & Webster plus Craig and Bruno’s Great British Road Trips.

Joanna Lumley and Fern Britton have also done similar series.

Speaking about the glut of TV road trips, Packham said: “We’re a bit more environmentally friendly than Craig and Bruno.

“We have our electric camper van and there will be less about ballroom dancing in ours.

“They will be prancing and we will be picking up droppings and skulls. It will be very different anyway but let’s see how it goes.”
