BBC Sports Personality Of The Year sees viewers switch off as they slam format change

Viewers of BBC Sports Personality Of The Year switched off their TV's after complaints over scheduling and this year's line-up.

Presented by Alex Scott, Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan, the awards were filmed at MediaCity in Salford for the BBC.

The programme, which aired on Wednesday night on BBC One, celebrated the sporting achievements, the unsung heroes in sports and the athletes who have celebrated victories from the past twelve months.

However, viewers didn't feel there was much to celebrate. In fact, many viewers claimed to "reach for the remote" and branded the programme "boring". Some also took issue with the show being aired on a Wednesday night, when it typically airs on a Sunday night instead.

Flocking to social media, viewers didn't hold back in their criticism of the show. One viewer tweeted: "BBC Sports Personality of the Year used to be worth watching. No longer. And a pretty poor selection of candidates this year #SPOTY."

Another added: "Against my better judgement I started watching #SPOTY, and they are showing ice sweeping ffs... Where's the remote..."

A third said: "The BBC ruining another Xmas tradition! Always the last Sunday before Xmas, not a f******* Wednesday evening."

"Won’t bother with #SPOTY again, short list is poor, seems to be aimed at kids nowadays," another shared.

Rob Burrows story touched viewers who praised it as "inspirational" (PA)

"Used to be a great night this now bores me to tears! Never a mention of Ice Hockey and does it need 4 presenters?! Shan't be watching!" ranted another.

However, not all viewers were disappointed with the programme. Some found the touching celebrations of sports stars like Rob Burrow "inspirational".

One viewer tweeted: "Can’t cope with the absolute bravery and strength of rob burrows family & friends and the man himself of course … heartbreaking and inspirational"

Another agreed, as they wrote: "Absolute mess watching Rob Burrows and Kevin Sinfield, beautiful friendship."

A third said: "Just give all the awards to Rob Burrows, his family and his best pal, Kevin. Absolute heroes."

""Nothing beats Sports Personality of the Year and the darts. Christmas is officially here #SPOTY #DartsWorldChampionship," said another.
