Arsenal and England forward Beth Mead leads the nominees as Sports Personality of the Year 2022 takes place in Salford on Wednesday night.
The Lionesses star scored six goals and recorded five assists as England's women won a historic Euro 2022 crown at Wembley in the summer. She would be the first female footballer to win the award should she be crowned.
Her most likely challenger is England men's Test cricket captain Ben Stokes , with the all-rounder having played a starring role as England won the T20 World Cup as well as helping the Test side transform their fortunes with series wins against New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan.

Snooker's Ronnie O'Sullivan is also on the shortlist having won a remarkable seventh world title back in May, an achievement which made him an early frontrunner for the award. Athletics star Jake Wightman has also made the list alongside newly crowned women's floor champion in gymnastics Jessica Gadirova and curling Olympic Gold Medallist Eve Muirhead .
In addition to the main award, Lionel Messi has been confirmed as the winner of the overseas personality award following his exploits as Argentina were crowned world champions at the World Cup in Qatar. Meanwhile, skateboarder Sky Brown, diving star Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Gadirova are all believed to be frontrunners for the Young Sports Personality of the Year.

When is BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022?
BBC Sports Personality of the Year takes place on Wednesday, December 21 and begins at 6:45 pm with the main award presented just before 9pm.
