Emma Raducanu capped off a stunning year by winning the prestigious award on Sunday night.
The 19-year-old was the first qualifier ever to win a grand slam, and the first British woman to win a grand slam since Virginia Wade won Wimbledon in 1977. Amazingly, the teenager did it without dropping a single set across the entirety of the tournament.
She triumphed at Flushing Meadows in September without dropping a set.
She is the first woman to win the award since Zara Tindall in 2006, and the youngest winner since Michael Owen in 1998.
Tom Daley finished second and Adam Peaty in third following their Olympic success, while footballer Raheem Sterling, boxer Tyson Fury and Paralympic athlete Dame Sarah Stoney were also up for the award.
“It’s such an honour just to be amongst these nominees,” she said.
“To win is pretty amazing,”
