BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2021: Gareth Southgate and England scoop awards after Euro 2020

Gareth Southgate won the BBC Sports Personality Coach of the Year 2021 Award.

The England manager, who lead his players to the Euro 2020 final before a heartbreaking loss to Italy at Wembley, also saw his side scoop the Team of the Year gong on a celebratory night for the Three Lions.

Carrying on from his success during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Southgate became the first England manager in 55 years to lead his team at a major final. Aside from that, the former Middlesbrough has been frequently credited for his public-facing manner and ability to speak eloquently on a variety of difficult issues.

For his players, they are widely praised for forming an emotional connection with the fanbase again, emerging as genuine role models with Marcus Rashford doing so much work off of the pitch.

“Managing in football now is a very complex business,” said Southgate to the BBC.

“I’m fortunate to work with good people that make it easier for me.”

In total, England won 15 of their 19 games in 2021 and recorded their biggest victory in a generation by beating San Marino 10-0 in November. With Southgate singing a new contract until after Euro 2024, they look in a very strong place to continue to challenge for major honours.
