BBC's Thai reporter facing jail

BBC correspondent Jonathan Head has been accused of insulting the Thai monarchy, a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Two charges were raised in June, but a new complaint has now been lodged by a senior Thai police officer.

The "evidence" against Head includes articles from the BBC website that he did not write. Bob Dietz of the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists has called on the Thai authorities to drop the charges. He said: "Head's reporting has raised important questions about Thailand's deteriorating political situation and he should be allowed to report without fear of official reprisals."
