BBC's Race Across the World ends in dramatic finale for Leeds siblings

While the UK has been in lockdown, TV viewers have been gripped by the dramatic journey of Leeds siblings Dom and Lizzie Slater.

The brother and sister have featured in BBC Two programme Race Across the World as they travelled more than 20,000km from Mexico City to the most southerly city in the world - Ushuaia in Argentina.

Dom and Lizzie, from Wetherby, were the third of five couples to reach the final checkpoint in Buenos Aires in the penultimate episode - but the show came to a dramatic conclusion on Sunday, April 26.

The 21 and 22-year-olds were left with little more than £200 to travel the final 4,000km leg of the journey and they set off nine hours after the leaders.

In the final episode, the siblings were shown boarding a bus to Neuquen, where they started working on an almond plantation to save more cash.

However, Dom was soon left needing medical attention after succumbing to heatstroke, bringing back traumatic memories of an earlier episode in Peru where he was placed in a wheelchair after collapsing.

The duo were quickly back on the road though as they boarded a bus for a mammoth 1,000km journey and as they arrived in the southern Argentinian city of Comodoro Rivadavia, Dom endeared himself to his hometown viewers after he said: "Who needs a coat when you're from Yorkshire?"

They were then left with just over £80 after spending practically their entire remaining budget on another bus to take them closer to the finish line - a move that Dom described as "risky".

It put them in the lead for a while and they were taken in by a local family in Rio Gallegos - before suddenly bumping into the other two remaining couples.

Their lack of funds finally caught up with them though as Dom and Lizzie were left at the bus station in Rio Grande while the other two couples raced ahead in taxis.

They could then only travel a further 100km before desperately trying to hitchhike - a move that proved to be too little, too late and they eventually finished in third place, two hours behind the other competitiors.

They weren't too disheartened though, with Dom saying: "We might not have won but we only finished two hours behind.

"We were both a bit lost going into this race, but we've sort of found ourselves a little bit."
