BBC's Naga Munchetty apologises for liking 'offensive' tweets about Nottinghamshire MP's flag

A BBC presenter has apologised after liking what she described as "offensive" tweets relating to Nottinghamshire MP Robert Jenrick's Union flag which was on display during an interview.

Mr Jenrick, the Government's housing secretary who also represents Newark for the Conservatives, was being interviewed by BBC Breakfast when presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty commented on his backdrop.

Mr Stayt's comments prompted outrage from other Twitter users.

In the interview he said: "I think your flag is not up to standard size for Government interview measurements and I think it's just a little bit small, but that's your department really."

Ms Munchetty laughed and added: "There’s always a flag. They had the picture of the Queen, though."

Following the interview Ms Munchetty has further apologised for liking what she said had been "offensive" tweets relating to Mr Jenrick's Union Jack flag.

In a tweet she said: "I 'liked' tweets today that were offensive in nature about the use of the British flag as a backdrop in a government interview this morning.

"I have since removed these 'likes'. This do not represent the views of me or the BBC. I apologise for any offence taken. Naga."

One of the tweets, liked by Ms Munchetty, read: "What has Charlie done? The flag shaggers will be up in arms. Tell him we love him."

Mr Jenrick also responded with a tweet of his own following the Twitter spat.

It read: "We're always proud to fly the Union Flag at [Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government].

"It's a symbol of liberty and freedom that binds the whole country together."
