Miranda Hart shuts down rumours of a return for hit BBC comedy series

When Miranda aired its last episode on New Year's Day in 2015, fans assumed that was the end of the smash-hit comedy series. Over the past couple of days, rumours have circled of a return for the hit series but, Hart has since shut down the rumours.

Writing on Twitter, Hart said: "And yes Twitter I look forward to all the thank God for that' etc ! This just for the few that were excited. No need to tell me that you're relieved" accompanied by an image that reads, "what was in the papers didn't come from me. Nothing planned at this time."

The news will no doubt come as a shame to viewers as the series, which also starred Tom Ellis, has been off-air for seven years. Hart has formally said, during an interview on Gaby Roslin's podcast, that she was "definitely thinking" about reviving the sitcom.

Miranda first appeared on our screens in 2009 and soon after, the series became a massive hit with viewers. Featuring Hart as a fictionalised version of herself, the series centres around the difficulties she gets into and sees her lust after Tom Ellis' character. The first series opened with 2.63 million viewers (10% audience share), rising to 3.14 million viewers (12% share) for the fourth episode.

In 2021 - Hart announced that she was taking a career break following the death of her dog, Peggy. The shih tzu/bichon frise inspired the memoir - Peggy and Me. Prior to her career break, Hart had notably played the character of Camilla "Chummy" Fortescue-Cholmondeley-Browne in the BBC's Call the Midwife.

Speaking on Gaby Roslin's podcast, Hart said of the comedy series: "I do think of them from time to time, a bit like you would a friend that you haven’t seen for a while, ‘Oh, what would they be up to…" Unfortunately, the time hasn't come yet for Miranda to return but who knows what the future might hold for the series.
