BBC’s Jon Kay Shares Heartbreaking News About Beloved Guest

Jon Kay has received an outpouring of love after sharing the sad news that Dave Smith, the man once known as the “miracle man” for surviving one of the longest Covid battles ever recorded, has passed away at the age of 76.

Taking to social media, the BBC Breakfast presenter posted a heartfelt tribute alongside photos of himself with Dave, including a selfie where he’s wearing a face mask while visiting the Bristol local. Dave first captured the public’s heart back in 2021 when he appeared on BBC Breakfast and told his extraordinary story of surviving Covid — a fight that lasted an unimaginable 300 days, reported the Express.

“Some sad news to share… ‘Miracle man’ Dave Smith has passed away at the age of 76,” Jon wrote. “The Bristol driving instructor and pub-singer made global headlines in 2021 after he revealed to me on BBC Breakfast that he’d had Covid for about 300 days in a row – longer than anyone else on the planet at the time.”

Dave’s health struggles were far from ordinary. He’d already endured years of cancer treatment, which left his immune system severely weakened. Doctors didn’t expect him to make it through the relentless virus. But Dave defied all odds — and after countless stints in intensive care, he finally beat Covid, proving nothing short of miraculous.

Despite the damage Covid did to his lungs, Dave never lost his passion for music. A familiar face on the Bristol pub and club circuit, he had been singing for decades. And even when breathing was a struggle, he refused to let go of his dream to perform again.

Jon Kay’s emotional tribute reflected just how much Dave had inspired people, both locally and far beyond. His resilience, humour, and determination to keep going — and keep singing — moved audiences when he first shared his journey on national TV.

The news of Dave’s passing has prompted a wave of kind messages from viewers who remember his bravery and optimism. Though his story began with pain and uncertainty, it became one of hope, reminding many what strength looks like.

For Jon and the countless others who met or were touched by Dave’s story, the “miracle man” won’t be forgotten any time soon.
