BBC's Huw Edwards visibly moved as he announces The Queen's death to viewers

Huw Edwards looked visibly moved as he had the very difficult job of announcing The Queen's death to millions of BBC viewers at home.

The BBC, who had dedicated all of their programming to Her Majesty's condition, after news came in from Buckingham Palace at lunchtime that she was under medical supervision, were just showing live pictures of crowds at the Palace in London, when confirmation reached them that The Queen had died at the age of 96.

The camera cut live to Huw, who'd be in the studio all afternoon to anchor the coverage. The popular presenter took a moment to compose himself, before reading out the statement from Buckingham Palace.

He told viewers: "A few moments ago, Buckingham Palace announced the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Palace has just issued this statement it says: 'The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral and return to London in the morning."

Reiterating what he'd just read out, Huw, who wore a black tie from the moment he came on air hours earlier, added: "Within the past ew minutes, Buckingham Palace has announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II."

Huw then looked solemn as he glanced down at his desk to recap on the statement, before footage of The Queen played out on screen as Huw briefly highlighted her rein as monarch.

The screen then went black for a few seconds before a black and white notice appeared on screen carrying the words 'News Report,' as Huw explained the BBC was interrupting its normal programme to bring news of The Queen's death.

After Huw read out the Buckingham, Palace statement once again, a picture of a younger Queen appeared on screen as the National Anthem played.

Just like Huw in the BBC studio, many viewers at home were deeply saddened by the news, with many praising Huw for his professionalism on Twitter. One reacted: "Respect to Huw Edwards @bbcnews That must have been so desperately difficult to announce - even though they were expecting it. May she rest in peace. So very sad."

A second tweeted: "Huw Edwards BBC news clearly with tears in his eyes, announcing it. Very sad."
