BBC's Freddie Flintoff 'can't stop smiling' after protégé granted asylum

Freddie Flintoff has said he "can't stop smiling" after his protege was granted asylum in the UK.

Adnan Miakhel wowed the legendary cricketer as he showcased his extraordinary ability on the BBC show, Field of Dreams. The three part series saw the former international player return to his home town of Preston with the aim to create a new team from a group of promising youngsters.

Freddie was particularly impressed with Adnan's natural ability, but his hopes of a career were put on hold as he waited to be told if he had been granted asylum. The 16-year-old had fled Afghanistan after his mum arranged for him to be smuggled out of the country to avoid joining a group of local militia fighters.

Adnan's brother was killed after he was forced to join the militia by his dad. The talented youngster has been fostered by Elaine Jefferson and Barry Brocklehurst - and Freddie has taken to Twitter to reveal Adnan has been granted asylum following another appeal from his foster parents.

He said: "Adnan’s got asylum. Massive thank you to you all, can’t stop smiling."

Adnan, who plays cricket for Wigan in the Liverpool and District Cricket Competition, is a Liverpool FC fan and his foster parents told the Guardian how they were elated after finding out the news. Elaine said: "We all just went berserk. We just sat in the back of the car outside the fish and chip shop in Standish in Wigan and we just ate fish and chips out of the paper. That was our celebration!”
