He notably went on to play for Newcastle and managed Sheffield United and the Wales national team after retiring from playing professional football. Former teammates Alan Shearer and John Hartson are among those who've paid their respects.

Speed made an appearance on Football Focus the day before his death and former presenter of the BBC show, Dan Walker, has released a tearful video on social media.

In a tearful video, Walker said: "Gary Speed was an amazing footballer and just an all-round good bloke.

"Anybody who played alongside Gary would always say he was brilliant in the dressing room. Always the player that others went to when they had a problem.

"I always found him to be a really kind bloke. He was always interested in other people. He'd always ask you questions about your family, about what you'd been up to and he'd remembered things you'd said to him in previous conversations and I don't think there are many people like that."

The video was produced by BBC Sport and featured footage of Speed throughout his career.

"First of all, I can't believe it's 10 years ago," continued Walker.

He spoke about Gary had chatted with the camera operator on the show who told him they'd attended the same school. How the operator was "absolutely delighted" that Speed was showing a real interest.

The TV host also recounted how their last interaction was to arrange a game of golf the following week, shook hands and said their goodbyes.

"He didn't even say hello, he just said 'Have you heard about Gary'."

"I remember I just walked home, really numb."
