BBC's Ambulance documentary set to return in 2021

The BBC's Ambulance documentary is set to return later this year as it follows how frontline paramedics responded to emergencies during the coronavirus pandemic.

The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) announced that its staff will be the focus of series seven.

In a statement, it said the six-episode series "captures challenges faced by frontline staff responding during the second wave of the pandemic, as the service dealt with an ever-increasing volume of calls."

It added that the programme "throws a sharp spotlight on the stresses and strains of the NHS."

Ambulance was first broadcast on BBC One in 2016 and has followed the work of several ambulance crews from the London Ambulance Service, West Midlands Ambulance Service and NWAS.

It won a BAFTA for 'Best Factual Series or Strand' in 2018 following the broadcast of its third series.

The documentary is produced by factual-television company Dragonfly.

NWAS said: "Ambulance offers a revelatory 360-degree portrait of North West Ambulance Service efforts to respond within minutes to over 4000 emergency calls every day from across a diverse region covering more than 5,400 square miles.

"The latest series, which is the third one NWAS has been involved in, for the first time showcases staff from Lancashire and Cumbria as well the Merseyside and Manchester area.

"The first six, 60-minute episodes will be screened later this year."
