BBC's A Very British Scandal trailer sees Claire Foy as 'vilified' Duchess of Argyll

The exciting first trailer for BBC historical drama A Very British Scandal has dropped.

The series centres on the divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll - which is described as "one of the most notorious, extraordinary and brutal legal cases" of the 20th century.

Paul Bettany and Claire Foy will play the lead couple - Ian Campbell and Margaret Campbell - whose high-profile and scandalous divorce during the 1960s made headlines.

The three-part series, written by Sarah Phelps, is said to explore the social and political climate of post-war Britain - in particular looking at attitudes towards women at the time.

The new trailer shows Foy, best known for playing Queen Elizabeth II in the first two seasons of Netflix 's the Crown, sporting a retro wave hairstyle and period clothing.

She's seen in scenes alongside Bettany - known for playing Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - who stars as her on-screen husband, the Duke of Argyll.

The trailer, released today, features scenes of the couple at odds with one another - even hinting at infidelity.

And it then teases the eventual break-down of their 12 year marriage, with Margaret heard saying at one point: "He doesn't get to divorce me, I get to divorce him!"

The true case - which made headlines in 1963 - is said to have exposed accusations of forgery, theft, violence, drug-taking, bribery and an explicit Polaroid picture.

The broadcaster previously said: "As [many] sought to vilify her, Margaret kept her head held high with bravery and resilience."

It further stated that she "refused to go quietly as she was betrayed by her friends and publicly shamed by a society that revelled in her fall from grace."

The cast of the limited series - based on true events - also includes Julia Davis, Amanda Drew and Miles Jupp.
