BBC responds to Line of Duty fans after complaints over finale

The dust appears to have settled since outraged Line of Duty fans expressed their view on the finale.

More than 12 million people tuned in to watch the last episode of series six earlier this month after six weeks of teasing as to the identity of 'H'.

After a series of tense scenes and plenty of theories, episode seven finally saw DS Ian Buckells unmasked as the unlikely culprit.

Fans felt the last episode lacked the drama seen in the previous five series.

Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio later admitted they knew it 'wouldn't appeal to everyone', but thanked those for watching in their droves.

No, the BBC has issued a statement after fans complained.

"We always aim to produce the most captivating drama possible for viewers to enjoy and we're extremely proud of this series – for the recognition it received and for the support from viewers," the BBC said in a statement.

"The series six finale deliberately aimed to wrongfoot viewers’ expectations. Out of an audience of 16 million, we recognise that the programme makers’ dramatic choices won’t have met with everyone’s approval."

Despite the divisive ending, fans were still left wondering if the end of series six opened up the opportunity for another run.

There has been no word on a seventh run of the cop drama and with a two-year wait between series five and six, there may not be an answer any time soon.
