The BBC has said a peak audience of 13.4 million viewers were watching the Platinum Party at the Palace on BBC One on Saturday night. It represents a huge audience share of 66.8% the broadcaster said.
The average overnight audience was 11.2million and this figure is likely to swell as people catch up on the musical extravaganza on iPlayer. The special Jubilee event, which was held outside Buckingham Palace, was opened by Queen + Adam Lambert.
It featured a star-studded line-up with performances from Duran Duran, Craig David, Alicia Keys and Sir Rod Stewart among others, and was closed by Diana Ross. There was also a musical trip through British music from dance act Diversity, as well as songs from hit musicals including Hamilton, Six, The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King.
After the concert, Sir Rod Stewart said he wanted to stay on the stage “all night”. Speaking to the PA news agency after his performance, he said: “It was fabulous. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and while I’ve done it before, never on this scale.”
Reflecting on what it is like to meet the Queen, Sir Rod said: “She’s homely. She’s funny. I’ve had so many funny occasions with her that make me smile. She’s just wonderful. ”
Sir Rod said the Queen is “a constant” in our lives, adding: “There’s not many of those. Not many at all.”
