BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright's touching final act after death revealed

Steve Wright’s final act of generosity has been revealed, with the late BBC Radio presenter leaving significant donations to charity in his will.

The broadcaster, who died suddenly in February 2024 aged 69, made provisions for Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation, gifting them £15,000 and £10,000 respectively.

The tax-free donations were part of an estate valued at £53,623, later reduced to £40,623 after deductions.

Wright’s will, signed in 2023, was approved in the High Court last week.

The remainder of the estate was divided between his two children, Tom and Lucy, from his marriage to Cyndi Robinson. The couple divorced in 1999.

Although his personal estate was modest, the bulk of Wright’s wealth is held in his company, 22 Media Limited, which reportedly had £3.3 million in cash assets in 2023.

An insider told The Sun: “It is typical of Steve that he thought of charities as well as his family.

“He was known for his big heart throughout his career and was always thinking of others.”

Wright was a much-loved stalwart of the airwaves, hosting Steve Wright's Saturday Show and Sunday Love Songs from 1996 and Steve Wright in the Afternoon from 1999 until 2022.

He left his afternoon show in 2022, telling press that the station "wanted to do something new" as he was replaced by Scott Mills, but he continued hosting Sunday Love Songs until his death.

Announcing Wright’s death, his family said in a statement: “It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright.

“In addition to his son, Tom, and daughter, Lucy, Steve leaves behind his brother, Laurence and his father, Richard.”

It continued: “Also, much-loved close friends and colleagues, and millions of devoted radio listeners who had the good fortune and great pleasure of allowing Steve into their daily lives as one of the UK’s most enduring and popular radio personalities.

“As we all grieve, the family requests privacy at this immensely difficult time.”

A death certificate issued last July confirmed that Wright died from a ruptured stomach ulcer.

The BBC later stated the official causes of death were acute peritonitis and a perforated peptic gastric ulcer.
