BBC Radio 1Xtra live show stopped after stabbing backstage

A BBC Radio 1Xtra live show had to pulled from air Saturday night after a man was attacked backstage.

Birmingham Live reports that West Midlands Police and ambulance service were called to Arena Birmingham, in King Edward's Road, and the audience evacuated, after violence broke out at around 10pm on Saturday.

The line-up included Aitch, French Montana, Ms Banks, Headie One, JayKae, Miraa May, Ms Banks, Stylo G and DaniLeigh with Wizkid as the headline act.

The show was stopped 40 minutes early.

In a statement, police said that the victim, a man, sustained slash wounds but did not need to be taken to hospital.

"Following an isolated serious incident, we have had to stop 1Xtra Live in Birmingham.

"We are co-operating fully with the police to establish what has happened."

West Midlands Police said in a statement: "Security [at Arena Birmingham] alerted police to an assault which took place in the backstage area at 10pm on Saturday.

"It's understood that a man sustained a slash wound during the assault. He was treated by on-site medical staff and did not require hospital treatment."

In a Facebook post, BBC Radio 1Xtra said: "We’re sorry to everyone who attended 1Xtra Live in Birmingham for the early finish, however the health and safety of everyone involved is always our top priority.

"We are upset and saddened that something like this should happen to a guest at one of our events and we remain in close contact and continue to offer our full support."
