Danny Murphy and Martin Keown are in agreement over Thomas Tuchel's decision to take Callum Hudson-Odoi off in Chelsea's 1-1 draw at Southampton.
The 20-year-old was introduced at half-time as he replaced Tammy Abraham for the Blues, who were a goal down at the time.
The Saints took the lead through Liverpool loanee Takumi Minamino despite the visitors dominating possession at St. Mary's.
However, when Hudson-Odoi was brought on, the game changed somewhat and he played a part in Chelsea's equaliser.
The winger found Mason Mount in the box and the midfielder was brought down by Danny Ings and the Blues were awarded a penalty.
Mount scored from the spot to level the game but Chelsea were unable to find a winner down on the south coast.
Tuchel made a bold decision to take Hudson-Odoi off after just over 30 minutes of him being on the field and put it down to his "attitude" not being right.
"No, it was not injury-related," the Blues boss confirmed after the match. "I was not happy with his attitude, energy and counter-pressing.
"In a game where it was not easy to create chances, you need to rely on counter-pressing to force errors to get the second ball and get the easy chance."
Speaking on Match of the Day, Murphy couldn't believe what he saw from the former Paris Saint-Germain head coach.
"I was flabbergasted as to why he brought him off and then publicly criticising him - that’s not the way to go, for me," the ex-Liverpool midfielder said.
“I think when you’re at a new club and you’re trying to inspire players, you have to be careful who you choose as your victims.
"He’s a young lad who’s done well for him in recent weeks, he’s publicly shamed him by bringing him off and then he criticised him in the interview.
"It’s not just the lad who has to recover from the confidence blow, it’s his team-mates who are thinking, ‘hold on, that’s not the type of manager I respond to’.
"There are going to be people out there who think he’s getting the best out of his players and if you don’t do it, then he’s going to kick you up the backside, well, I think those days are gone a little bit.”
Former Arsenal defender Keown added: “The feeling when you get taken off, the indignity and shame for a player.
"He’s building relationships with his new players, we did a game recently at Barnsley and I could hear him criticising the players and you’ve got to keep a lid on that a bit.
"I think the manager might regret that decision.”
