BBC pulls Hanad Hassan refugee crypto coin documentary from schedules

The BBC pulled a documentary about a young refugee who claims he turned £37 into £5.9 million using cryto coin.

The half-hour programme was due to focus on Hanad Hassan - a 20-year-old who reportedly 'made millions trading cryptocurrency' after he fled war-torn Somalia to come to the UK, reports Birmingham Live.

The piece did not air on Wednesday night as scheduled, with the BBC saying it "could not disclose the reason why".

Hanad came to England with his parents when he was 14.

He did well at school and then went on to university.

However, he made a $50 - £37 - investment in cryptocurrency and soon dropped out to pursue it as a career, it is understood.

The BBC also pulled a story from its website, which had reported that within three months Hanad's investment was worth $1m (£738,000).

The article also said he had set up a cryptocurrency to support a charity - with £200,000 already spent on helping others.

The article also referred to plans to open a foodbank in Mr Hassan's hometown in Birmingham as he claimed he has a net-worth of almost $8m (£5.9m).

A BBC spokesman said: “The programme has been withdrawn from tonight’s schedule while we look into editorial issues.”

As he was filmed for the documentary his father Omar told the BBC: "I tried to bring my family to a better place to give them a better life that we didn't have there. Our life in Somalia was like no life in the UK.

"There was a lot of wars and fighting going on, it was not a safe place to see your kids growing up."
