BBC producer Tom Giles appointed Panorama editor

The BBC producer who was with John Simpson when they were attacked by "friendly fire" in Iraq has been appointed the new editor of Panorama. Tom Giles, an executive producer for BBC current affairs, succeeds Sandy Smith, who was appointed executive editor of BBC1's The One Show.

Giles produced documentary series Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain and the British Family, presented by Kirsty Young. He was also the producer of the Newsnight programme in which Jeremy Paxman famously asked Michael Howard the same question 12 times in 1997. He begins his new job in March.
