BBC presenter stalked former partner leaving him 'petrified' to go out, court hears

A BBC DJ stalked a former partner leaving him “petrified” and fearing to go out, a court heard.

Ebunola Akintade, 41, pursued the man, an NHS worker, in a four month period in which he turned up unannounced at his home on multiple occasions.

The DJ, who has regularly featured on BBC Radio, also set up a fake profile on a dating site to try to contact him, Bexley Magistrates were told on Tuesday.

Akintade, from Stratford, admitted stalking at a previous hearing on 25 September.

The charge related to a period between 1 August 2022 and 31 November 2022 with the stalking taking place in Greenwich.

It began after the pair split up after a brief relationship, the court heard.

In a victim impact court read to the court by prosecutor Jessica Kang the man described how he had to “look left and right” when he left his front door in case he was accosted by Akintade.

It said: “He was completely fixated on me. At the time of the incident I was petrified. He would turn up a unannounced and sit outside…. I had to change the locks, I put furniture up against my door.”

He described how the stalking “impacted on my career” while he felt unsafe outside his home.

He said he also had problems forming new relationships with his fear ramped up when Akintade set up a fake dating app profile to try to get a meeting with him.

The victim added that his friends noticed a change in his character and that he had become more introverted and “less fun” after Akintade’a campaign of stalking.

He added: “I feel like I have to look over my shoulder my life is on hold.”

In mitigation Akintade’s lawyer said he had recognised his problem and had received counselling and had pleaded guilty to the charge of stalking causing harm or distress.

Akintade, who the court heard had been working on a TV news channel, was due to be sentenced but Magistrate Stephen Langford on Tuesday, ruled that he did not have sufficient powers and so referred the case to the Crown Court.

The sentencing will be held at Woolwich Crown Court at a date yet to be fixed.

Akintade was told he remained subject to a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting the victim or visiting his workplace.
